On his opening remarks, president Mustafa Omar emphasized the importance of unity and urged the participants to work on peace and stability of the region and the country at large.

The president highlighted the role of Somali region leaders, intellectuals, community elders in ongoing reforms in the countrywide and how best the region can advocate and benefits from the national cake.

Reportedly, the forum will also brainstorm on possible unification of the ruling party (ESPDP) with the EPRDF.

Last month, the ruling coalition, Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF) unveiled its intention to form a single national party and thus smaller parties that have been operating as affiliate parties in regions like Benishangul Gumuz, Gambella, Afar, and Somali regions will be a full member of the pan Ethiopian party to be introduced.

The PM has not yet specified how he intends to merge these parties with EPRDF, but analysts say this move will curtail, if not completely dissolve, the current federal system and regional autonomy we have in Ethiopia.
